Some of the beautiful gardens in Oxfordshire and Cotswolds have been designed by the increasing number of professional and amateur women gardeners during the 20th century. This talk will examine the influences on these gardeners and their designs. These include the newly established horticultural colleges at the beginning of the 20th century, Gertrude Jekyll’s and Vita Sackville West’s designs and new technological and scientific advances. This will be illustrated by of the gardens created by Rosemary Verey, Norah Lindsay and Valerie Finnis.
Katherine Bradley has long been fascinated by women’s history. She gives talks on various aspects of 19th and 20th century women’s history linked to Oxfordshire.
She taught history and social sciences at the Open University and history at Oxford Brookes. She was a co-founder of the annual Oxford International Women’s Festival which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary.
